Overview
Developed within the Shape module at Solent University, Smiling Square investigates the creative potential of geometric constraint.
The square operates as both container and character, a fixed structure capable of holding expression, tension, humour, and personality. Through shifts in proportion, colour, composition, and detail, a range of distinct identities emerges from a singular form.
The system extends beyond static illustration into a series of self-published zines and motion graphic elements, translating character into sequence, pacing, and movement. Across print and screen, the project demonstrates how constraint can inform art direction, storytelling, and cohesive visual language.
